The Shortest Path to Any Goal is a Straight Line

Author: Bill Gluth

Heres something we all seem to do. We set a goal, and then we get busy and move in directions that dont support reaching that goal. Our days get filled with a myriad of activities and POOF, the year is gone and we havent moved very close to reaching what we really want out of life and business.

In Simpleology, Mark Joyner tells a great story about pens and the US Space Mission.

NASA Astronauts wanted a pen that wrote in zero gravity. So, NASA went about creating one. It took millions of dollars and years and years to create it. They eventually did and it was amazing; for a while.

Russia took a straight line approach. They used a pencil instead.

A straight line always makes the most sense, but often we dont know how to create and follow it.

Start by understanding what you want from your life in business.

1. What is the ideal vision for your business?
2. If you were living your greatest talent and passion in business, what would it be?

Write the answer to those questions down on paper. Refer to it often.

Clarity is the key.

* Writing the information down provides clarity.

* Reading it every day for a few minutes inspires you to focused action.

* Knowing what your goals are allows you to take a straight line approach to planning your day.

Planning your day ensures you are spending more time being productive on things that matter to you and less time being busy with things that keep you at the status quo.

Spend just spend 15 minutes, before your day starts, creating it on paper. What are you going to do that is moving you a small step closer to what you want in life? Think pencil, not pen.

EXAMPLE: I want to enjoy my business more 2006.

ACTION: List what you do NOT like about your business.

The opposite of what you do NOT like will be what you DO like.

Schedule at least one activity each day that brings you a small step toward enjoying your business. Be sure to analyze what you do throughout your day now. Stop doing things that take you away from your goal of enjoying your business.

Replace that time with activities that bring you enjoyment and satisfaction each and every day. When you take action that leads to what you want, you are passionate and on fire! When you are passionate and on fire, clients and prospects are naturally attracted to you.

The reason?

Because it is so unusual to interact with someone who L O V E S what they are doing.

Straight lines make you unique in a commodity driven world because you love every day instead of thinking of them as a chore.

Its contagious. See how quickly you can catch the fever of living a straight line approach to every aspect of your life in business.
