Author: Rahul Viz

Every cinema in Amsterdam screens films in their original language with Dutch or English subtitles. There are some 55 movie theatres to choose from, many of which are located around Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein. Though it is advisable to book tickets in advance as watching cinema is quite popular.

Like any other city, Amsterdam caters for all tastes offering first run cinemas and art-houses or film-huizens. With the exception of Uitkijk, every cinema sells popcorn and an array of hot and cold beverages. The choice is unlimited one wants to watch an art-house film or cult classic, go to Het Ketelhuis (Westergasfabriek, Harlemmerweg), the Rialto (Ceintuurbaan) the stunning Film Museum or The Movies on Haarlemmerdijk, which has its own restaurant. For the ultimate cinematic experience, a must is Tuschinski, a grand Art Deco cinema.

An old cinema palace conveniently located between the Munt tower and the Rembrandtplein. Built by the immigrant from Poland Abraham Tuschinski, the cinema opened in 1921 and it remains till today with its Art Deco interior one of the most cherished buildings in Amsterdam. Tuschinski has been recently rebuilt, a modern annex has been added, the cinema has been modernized, but the character of its old part has been preserved.

Reguilerbreestraat, the Path Tuschinski is an amazing feat of Art Deco elegance. Designed by a Polish Jew, Abraham Tuschinski, who bought a building in the Devil's Corner of the city, once renowned for its slums, it is a popular spot for sightseers and film buffs. The interior is awe - inspiring, and catching a film here is highly recommended. To enjoy the most splash out on a VIP ticket which goes complete with finger buffet, as much champagne and beer as one can drink and a seat in the best part of the cinema. If there's a big group of try the private box for a truly memorable night at the flicks. The building also boasted not only a great movie hall, but a cabaret-dinner club named "La Gait" , a Japanese tea room, a Moorish suite, and elegant foyers. A smaller auditorium has since been created from these rooms.
