Police Background Checks - Are You Really Who You Say You Are?

Author: Matthew Bass

In today's world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

If you are hiding a secret past, you better hope that you don't get stopped by a policeman! A police background check can pull up all sorts of information about you. And what is interesting about a police background check is that information cannot always be found by traditional methods of background searching. So beware all of you people with aliases! A police background check could be the end of hiding your past.

So what exactly does the police background check find out? Let's start out with the information that can easily be obtained by various methods like phone calling, in-person visits and the internet. Your police background check could yield convictions for criminal activity - both misdemeanors and felonies. Are you registered in any sexual offender databases? Results can be pulled from there as well as court records. Outstanding warrants out for your arrest and whether you carry a permit for a concealed weapon can also be gained from a police background check.

Knowledge can give you a real advantage. To make sure you're fully informed about police background check, keep reading.

There are other reasons to obtain a police background check. If you are a volunteer that works with children, senior citizens or developmentally challenged people, chances are that the organization you volunteer for will request that you submit to a police background check. They are thinking about any potential harm that might befall on their members as well as lawsuits that might stem from inappropriate behavior. With a police background check, the organization can find out all it needs in order to deem you appropriate for serving in a volunteer role. Teachers, school bus drivers, school janitors and anyone else who works on school property are also subject to a police background check.

The police background check does not disclose some information. For instance, medical records are not a part of any background reporting. Unless you give expressed written permission, no one can access that information. Other data that may not make it on a police background check includes military information and whether or not you received any disciplinary action while serving. So those court marshals and time spent in the brig may never be revealed! Seriously, the United States government keeps a tight rein on military information, no matter what branch of the armed forces. Education is also a part of the mix. However, actual grade transcripts and financial aid data is not released. And bankruptcy information is normally part of a police background check, except in those cases where it has been over ten years.

Mistaken identity happens rarely, but it does happen. If you are an employer and run a quick background check on job candidate John Doe, what happens, if accidentally, a different John Doe's profile comes up? The only way to really resolve it is through a police background check. The job candidate can prove their innocence by going to the police station to be fingerprinted. From there, the fingerprints can be compared to the other John Doe and run through their databases. So, depending on your past, you may or may not have anything to fear when a police background check is completed on you.

As your knowledge about police background checks continues to grow, you will begin to see how a police background check fits into the overall scheme of things. Knowing how something relates to the rest of the world is important too.
