Hurricanes and Swimming

Author: Lance Winslow

If you are a swimmer then you may have problems in the aftermath of a large category hurricane. During the 2005 Atlantic tropical hurricane season we saw many hurricanes which took out the power plants in the local region as well as the power lines for up to three or four weeks making it impossible for public swimming pools to open.

For those swimming pools, which had open areas, many were filled with debris. This is tough on a swimmer and tough on a parks and recreation districts, which have swimming pools. Swimming pools use power to run the pumps to circulate the water and keep the water clean for the swimmers. If these pumps cannot work then the swimming pools run into issues and cannot reopen for swimmers to go and swim.

This is extremely hard on those teams who compete in swimming and very difficult for the recreational swimmer who uses swimming to stay in shape. During the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season we can expect that more public swimming pools will be closed in the aftermath of the larger hurricanes and if you're a swimmer you might wish to think in advance how you will deal with this.

Many people who are recreational swimmers have chosen swimming over jogging as it is easier on the knees. But you should realize that the swimming pools in your local area may be close after hurricanes and you need to plan for different way to exercise. Please consider all of this in 2006.
