Meet the Neighbors Block Party

Author: Gail Leino

Summer brings with it a lot of wonderful experiences; the sound of crickets at night, trips to the beach, the smell of freshly cut grass in the morning, and in the suburbs of America it brings block parties. It's a time when children can ride their bicycles in the middle of the street without care, a game of catch football can go on uninterrupted and neighbors can evolve from the passing of polite hellos into the sharing of warm conversations.

The first step in throwing a block party is checking with your neighbors to see how many people would be interested in participating. Consult with your local town officials to investigate issues like permits and the use of barricades to block off the street. Each house is free to invite their own guests, set up their own tables and cook their own food. The real attractions, what makes each block party unique, comes from the mutual and diverse forms of entertainment that can be provided.

If a budget is established, the balance can be divided up between the participating houses. Pony rides or a mobile petting zoo are always great ideas for kids. Investigate different inflatable jumping structures for the children. Also, consider hiring a DJ for the evening- think about entertainment for the adults as well.

A fun idea is to organize a treasure hunt. Participants can organize themselves into teams of 4-6 people each. They will be given a list of hard to find items but must locate them without leaving the block. After a time limit of one hour, the team to get the most items wins. What about a water balloon fight? Children and adults like would love to participate in this kind of warfare. Supply plenty of water balloons and water guns. Look into renting water balloon slingshots. Each one can be placed at opposite sides of the street for an all out water war.
