The Secret Way to War by Mark Danner

Author: Lance Winslow

The Secret Way to War by Mark Danner tells of issues, which occur behind the scenes in every war between humans and human civilizations. Specifically the author here is discussing the Iraqi Gulf War II for the most part along with much of the history behind Saddam Hussein and the United States and the oil issues before that.

Mark Danner also discusses the bleak issues in Iraq and the critics who promote the doom and gloom potential futures, who are so often called; Cut and Run, escape artists of the liberal political persuasion. It is obvious that Danner is anti-Bush and a liberal by nature and yet he purports to be objective and sometimes is throughout the book, but not completely.

In a recent CSPAN Book Interview Mark Danner brings up issues and more questions such as; What is the solution in Iraq? Well there is none, it is a Civil War, what can the US do about that? Stay out of the way? Will there ever be peace?

In the book he sights the massive Looting of Iraq and explains how it was much more than just artwork and museum stuff. The Looters often went into buildings and literally took them apart, lighting, plumbing, you name it and then burned the carcass of nothing left but walls and sometimes not even windows.

This happened at many Iraqi Buildings in Baghdad including the National Library, University of Baghdad, Government Buildings and Museums; they then torched the buildings, as the US Soldiers watched, not enough forces to secure the country or police it. Danner complains about this and yet it was not our job to do that, only to remove Saddam Hussien.

Mark Danner also says that Iraq was better off with Saddam Hussein before the US came there. He sights examples such as the heat often some 115 degrees and the power was on 2-hours per day for a year after the war and when Saddam was there it was on 24-hours a day. Mark Danner says that the; First Causality of War is Truth; he recites the old quote.

Where as many a liberal might enjoy this book, I would say that it does show nations to not screw with the United States, as this is exactly what can happen to a nation, which does. It is too bad Mark Danner condemns the Bush Administration, as the Iraqi II War most likely prevented a World War III potential eventuality. I did not like the book, but if you have an open mind and realize it is a jaded use of information, you might like it?

Currently Lance is retired at age 40 and is running an Online Think Tank Forum while traveling North America. Perhaps considering something extremely challenging to do that will exercise his mind and utilize all his experiences, observations and skills. Any ideas?
